Walking the Invisible City was officially launched at the Oakland Museum of CA in August, 2011. From August-October, 2011 Walking the Invisible City included a free cell phone tour that included neighbor's stories and memories of the area. All of the audio from the tour is available here. Museum visitors enjoyed a free-admission day of family-friendly events including: Bike Trippers bike tours led by veteran OMCA docent Pete Barnett. Pete led several groups through part of Walking the Invisible City’s downtown tour to learn about lost history, local heroes and the city’s oldest parks. The Oakland Museum’s 'Bike Trippers' program offers free seasonal bike tours of downtown Oakland on the 3rd Sunday of the month. Hands-on tamale making demonstrations by Tina 'Tamale' Ramos, third generation Old Oakland resident and restaurateur. Tina is co-owner of La Borinquena Restaurant, a 67-year old establishment that is one of the last remaining vestiges of Oakland's first Latino barrio. Tina has been a stead-fast supporter of 10,000 Steps since its very beginning. Qigong open class led by master Edward Yu, Vice President, Chinese American Citizens Alliance. In the Museum's garden, people of all ages practiced this ancient Chinese art form that offers peace and equilibrium for the mind and body. Ed has been an active member of the CACA for many years and has been a dedicated collaborator with 10,000 Steps. Dragon Dance from Rising Dragon Culture Center & Lincoln Square Recreation Center. This dynamic performance was an exciting close to the day's events. This performance was made possible by members of the Oakland Improv Collective and Chinatown's local Boy Scout Troop. The Culture Center offers free training for Lion Dance, Dragon Dance, American and Chinese Folk Dance and Chinese Chorus, every Sunday from 10:00am to 12:30pm at Oakland's Lincoln Square Recreation Center. |
